Jeff Downing moved from New York to San Francisco twenty years ago to pursue a professional career in music and art. He was particularly drawn to the spirit of experimentation and nonconformity that characterizes art and music from California. He founded several musical groups in the 1990s and has exhibited his ceramic pieces throughout the United States and internationally.

Inspired by childhood memories, nature, and dreams, his work seeks to invoke feelings concerning the human condition and our varied relationships with the natural world. The originality of each sculpture stems from an improvisational approach to the creative process.

The forms emerge from a swift process of modeling the clay allowing the natural qualities of the material to guide the composition. The true potential of this method of working is realized when successfully integrated intention is combined with chance discovery.

Each dog is made from high-fired ceramic stoneware with slips
and special glazes. Some have individual teeth and brightly glazed
tongues. They can be placed inside or outside without being affected
rain or sun.
